2009 IRISH MEMORIAL 5K RUN CANCELED DUE TO BUDGET CUTS

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Eighth Annual Irish Memorial 5K Run, scheduled for April 5, 2009 has been canceled due to budgets cuts by the City of Philadelphia.

The annual event, which has been growing year by year, was conceived to raise awareness of The Irish Memorial and to raise funds for the ongoing maintenance of the memorial and surrounding park.

The success of the event has been dependent on the support of many volunteers, contributions by several corporate sponsors, support from the many loyal participants and the support by the City of Philadelphia for services such as police and fire rescue for traffic control, safety, first aid and emergency response.

Given the current economic conditions and the city budget cuts, the Irish Memorial organization would have to pay for all of the services provided by the city. Unfortunately, these costs would far exceed the net revenues realized from the event, which has forced the cancelation of this year’s event.
