Educational & Cultural Aspects Philadelphia - a major center of history, public art and architecture, and now the national site of the Irish Memorial. Because this project is a narrative sculpture, it creates exciting educational and cultural opportunities for all who visit the City of Philadelphia, and in particular for local school children. The prime site of the Memorial at Front & Chestnut Streets, in the historic Penn's Landing district, will help increase visibility for the project with the millions of tourists and native Philadelphians who currently pass by the site throughout the year. Additionally, a $130 million redevelopment program is slated for the area between Walnut & Market Streets, the section of Penn's Landing most intensively used by the public.
As part of an educational initiative, many school districts
throughout the country are adding the "Irish Famine" to the
history curriculum. This memorial will give stirring visual presentation coupled
with substantial historical data to complement the curriculum at the school level.
The park-like setting of the memorial will be a true educational experience,
telling the story of the starvation, the tragic and devastating aftermath and the
flight of a native people from their homeland. It also chronicles the arrival of
the Irish on American soil and their vast contributions made to the growth of this
nation. |
